MR. ABELSETH: Yes, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: In the forward part of the ship?
MR. ABELSETH: Yes. I was in compartment G on the ship.
SENATOR SMITH: Go ahead and tell us just what happened.
MR. ABELSETH: I went to bed about 10 o'clock Sunday night, and I think it was about 15 minutes to 12 when I woke up; and there was another man in the same room—two of us in the same room—and he said to me, "What is that?" I said, "I don't know, but we had better get up." So we did get up and put our clothes on, and we two went up on deck in the forward part of the ship. Then there was quite a lot of ice on the starboard part of the ship. They wanted us to go down again, and I saw one of the officers, and I said to him: "Is there any danger?" He said, "No." I was not satisfied with that, however, so I went down and told my brother-in-law and my cousin, who were in the same compartment there. They were not in the same room, but they were just a little ways from where I was. I told them about what was happening, and I said they had better get up. Both of them got up and dressed, and we took our overcoats and put them on. We did not take any life belts with us. There was no water on the deck at that time.
We walked to the hind part of the ship and got two Norwegian girls up. One was in my charge and one was in charge of the man who was in the same room with me. He was from the same town that I came from. The other one was just 16 years old, and her father told me to take care of her until we got to Minneapolis. The two girls were in a room in the hind part of the ship, in the steerage.
We all went up on deck and stayed there. We walked over to the port side of the ship, and there were five of us standing, looking, and we thought we saw a light.
SENATOR SMITH: On what deck were you standing?
MR. ABELSETH: Not on the top deck, but on—I do not know what you call it, but it is the hind part, where the sitting room is; and then there is a kind of a little space in between, where they go up on deck. It was up on the boat deck, the place for the steerage passengers on the deck. We were then on the port side there, and we looked out at this light. I said to my brother-in-law: "I can see it plain, now. It must be a light."

M. ABELSETH : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Dans la partie avant du navire?
M. ABELSETH : Oui. J’étais dans le compartiment G.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Allez-y, dites-nous exactement ce qui s’est passé.
M. ABELSETH : Je me suis couché vers 22 heures dimanche soir, et je crois qu’il était minuit moins le quart quand je me suis réveillé. Il y avait un autre homme dans la même cabine — deux d’entre nous dans la même cabine — et il m’a dit : « Qu’est-ce que c’est? » J’ai dit : « Je ne sais pas, mais nous ferions mieux de nous lever. » Nous nous sommes donc levés et nous nous sommes habillés, et nous sommes tous les deux montés sur le pont dans la partie avant du navire.
Ensuite, il y avait beaucoup de glace sur la partie tribord du navire. Ils voulaient qu’on redescende, et j’ai vu un des officiers, et je lui ai dit : "Y a-t-il un danger ?" Il m’a répondu : «Non.» Je n’en étais pas satisfait, cependant, alors je suis allé le dire à mon beau-frère et à mon cousin, qui se trouvaient dans le même compartiment. Ils n’étaient pas dans la même cabine, mais ils étaient juste un peu plus loin d’où j’étais. Je leur ai dit ce qui se passait, et j’ai dit qu’ils feraient mieux de se lever. Tous les deux se sont levés et se sont habillés, et nous avons pris nos manteaux et les avons mis. Nous n’avons pas pris de ceintures de sauvetage avec nous. Il n’y avait pas d’eau sur le pont à ce moment-là.
On a marché jusqu’à la partie arrière du navire et on a rencontré deux filles norvégiennes. L’une était sous ma responsabilité et l’autre était responsable de l’homme qui était dans la même cabine que moi. Il venait de la même ville que moi. L’autre n’avait que 16 ans, et son père m’a dit de m’occuper d’elle jusqu’à ce qu’on arrive à Minneapolis. Les deux filles étaient dans une cabine de la partie arrière du navire, en 3ème classe.
Nous sommes tous montés sur le pont et y sommes restés. Nous avons marché jusqu’au côté bâbord du navire, et nous étions cinq debout, à regarder, et nous pensions avoir vu une lumière.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Sur quel pont étiez-vous?
M. ABELSETH : Pas sur le pont supérieur, mais sur — je ne sais pas comment vous l’appelez, mais c’est la partie arrière, où se trouve le salon; et puis il y a une sorte d’espace entre les deux, où on peut monter sur le pont. C’était vers le pont des embarcations, l’endroit pour les passagers de 3ème classe. Nous étions alors du côté bâbord et nous avons regardé ce feu. J’ai dit à mon beau-frère : "Je peux le voir clairement, maintenant. Ça doit être une lumière."
